Bell Post Hill to honour one of its ‘greatest ever’

BELL POST HILL will be opening its GDFNL season with a lot to play for, as the Panthers take on Anakie at Myers Reserve on Saturday, with club legend Beau McNamara notching up 200 games.

The five time premiership player has been a stalwart of the club, coming up from the junior ranks to win a best and fairest and feature in the GDFNL Team of the Year on four occasions.

The vice-captain has represented the GDFNL four times at interleague level and was also a member of the Bell Post Hill ‘Team of 40 Years’.

Senior coach Justin Tarr had nothing praise for the key defender.

“He’s one of our greatest ever players,” he said.

“He started junior footy with the under 14’s and has gone on to win five premierships.”

Tarr said the club has a lot to celebrate this week to kick off the season, with a few other noteworthy highlights, including skipper Jack Yates brining up game 100 in the red and blue.

“This week’s about celebrating Beau’s milestone and also Jack Yates.

“We’ve got a lot of mew guys into the club as well so it’ll be good for them to play together.

“The three Costello brothers are playing together for the first time this week as well.

“The two Flaccavento brothers, first time playing senior football together as well so there’s a lot going on.

“We’ve also got our reserves coach who’s gone through a cancer battle throughout the last 12 months and he’s come out the other side of it for his first game back.

“So there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Tarr said the team will be ’50/50′ between celebrating some significant milestones, but also keeping their eyes on the task at hand and starting well.

“We really embrace those type of things as a club and acknowledge them.

“When days like this come up you got to really enjoy them.

“But on the flipside to that as well, we’ve got a lot we need to work on.

“The senior side in particular we just need to play our best footy.

“We’ve got a lot of depth as well so the guys that are in the side this week will want to hold their spot.”
