GEELONG boss Brian Cook was on the NRL’s hit-list for its vacant CEO’s position, it has been revealed.

Fairfax newspapers are reporting that Cook was approached by the recruiting firm engaged by the NRL to put together a shortlist in its search for a replacement for Dave Smith.

It is being reported Cook, along with Richmond chief Brendon Gale, was approached before Christmas but knocked back the chance to be interviewed for the position.

Cook, who turned 60 in November, re-signed with the Cats until the end of the 2018 season shortly after the finish of the 2015 season.

He has been in charge at Simonds Stadium since 1999, having joined from the West Coast Eagles.

In that time, Cook has overseen the most successful era in the club’s history on-field and off it has been able to secure funding for four stages of the redevelopment of Kardinia Park.
