JOEL SELWOOD is racing the clock to be fit for Geelong’s opening round clash with Hawthorn as he continues to battle plantar fasciitis.

Selwood is unlikely play any part in the Cats’ NAB Challenge campaign, which starts on February 26 against Collingwood at Simonds Stadium

“I wouldn’t of thought so,” the inspirational leader replied when asked if he was any chance of lining-up in the pre-season during Geelong’s open training session today.

“I’ve done very little running so far. That starts ramping up around now.

“I’ll start joining in with the boys in the not-too-distant future and work away it until Round 1.

Selwood is confident he will run out on to the MCG to take the Hawks on March 28

“I’ve still got about 60 days until that Round 1 clash,” he said.

“Of a morning, it’s probably at its worst, then throughout the day it actually gets better.

“I’ve just got to make sure I look after it right now.”

Selwood has admitted to some frustration as a result of the injury.

“It hasn’t been ideal,” he said.

“Frustrating? I’ve probably been lucky the boys have been training the way they have.”

In better news for Selwood, the 28-year-old has signed a two-year contract extension with the Cats that will keep in the Hoops until the end of 2019.

“It was a pretty frank discussion over about 2-3 weeks.

“With my manager and (Geelong football manager) Steve Hocking, we sat down and just worked something out nice and quick.

Selwood will be 31 and have played 13 seasons by the time this deal is up, which raises question as to whether this is his last contract.

“Maybe. You never look too far ahead,” he said.

“Four years is a long time, especially where the game’s going.

“90 interchanges, the game will change a fair bit.

“I hope to be around forever, but I’m not going to be.”
