Slow and steady for Scoot

SCOTT SELWOOD has set his sights on a return to full training at the end of January as the Geelong recruit takes a “slow but steady” approach to his recovery from an ankle reconstruction.

The former West Coast midfielder went under the knife in mid-October, just days after arriving at the Cats, and has just started running.

“It sort of sounds worse than what it is,” Selwood said of the operation.

“But with the ankles, pretty much, it’s loose ligaments, tighten them all up again and clean them up, and hopefully get it back to scratch and try and get going again.”

Selwood managed just 25 games in his last two seasons with West Coast.

He was a late inclusion in the Eagles’ qualifying final, having missed the previous month of action, but was dropped for the preliminary final with the return of midfield stars Matt Priddis and Chris Masten.

“Generally, with most of the surgeries I’ve had in the past, I’ve rushed them and haven’t had too much worries,” Selwood said.

“Last time I had the surgery I probably rushed it a little bit too much and probably didn’t listen to my body enough.

“Whereas this time around it’s taking it slow and steady, just keep ticking the boxes and things like that.

“It’s a bit of a different process.”

It’s that different process that means the 25-year-old isn’t concerned about whether he is fit for the Round 1 blockbuster with Hawthorn on Easter Monday.

“It’s probably not something even in my thinking at the moment,” he said.

“It’s moreso just staying in the moment with where the actual ankle’s at and trying to focus on that.

“Last time I had this ankle injury, I tried to chase games and get back early.

“I know if I’m not 100 percent or near 100 per cent, I don’t play my best footy, so I’m probably better off just waiting until I get to 100 per cent, whenever that is, if it’s early in the year or whatever, that’s the aim at this stage.”
