THE region’s newest football club will begin life this year – 12 months earlier than planned.

To be known as the Surf Coast Suns, and playing out of Banyul Warri Fields, they will field teams at under 9, 10 and 12 level in the Geelong Junior Football League.

The Suns will wear a strip similar to AFL club Gold Coast.

“It is a very exciting time for the Torquay region to have a brand new club, with brand new facilities,” AFL Barwon chief Lee Hartman said.

“With the significant population growth in the region it was important to continue to provide areas to participate, which is AFL Barwon’s number one objective.”

The new club builds on the growth of an Auskick centre at North Torquay, which had 75 participants in 2015.
