BARWON Heads has appointed South Barwon greats James Garvey and Adam Wiseman as co-coaches for the next two years.

The Seagulls confirmed the appointment on Thursday morning.

Garvey, co-coached the Swans to the 2012 and 2013 GFL premierships, while Wiseman, who played in Geelong Amateur’s 2004 flag, before going on to appear in six flags with South Barwon, retired from the GFL just last week.

Garvey, who retired from playing last year, will be in a non-playing role, with Wiseman to be on-field general.

Garvey says he is looking forward to working with Barwon Heads’ promising young list.

“Each year they’ve stepped up a little bit,” he said.

“We’re pretty excited to get in there and see what we can do.”

Garvey is no stranger to the Bellarine having coached the BFL Interleague squad in 2014.

“I got to watch a bit of BFL footy (in 2014), which will definitely be handy,” he said.

The appointment is a coup for Barwon Heads according to president Brett Lewis.

“They have forged outstanding reputations as an integral part of South Barwon’s years of sustained success,” he said.

The duo replaces Peter O’Connor, who parted company with the Seagulls following Sunday’s elimination final loss to Queenscliff, which was the club’s first final since 2006.

“Peter has made an enormous contribution to the club over the last three years with his development of a young playing list,” Lewis said.

“This has placed us in a very strong position as we look towards 2015 and beyond.

“We have made the decision to build on this solid foundation, and believe James and Adam bring the necessary skills to further develop our list.”
