A CHANCE to test out new structures and systems against opponents ahead of practice matches has resulted in a number of local clubs holding joint training sessions during the build-up to the 2016 seasons.

GFL team Leopold held the first of three planned combined nights on Monday with Modewarre.

They will also train with Thomson next week and are waiting for confirmation from another club for a third session in a fortnight.

BFL premier Geelong Amateur and Grovedale will come together next week, and Geelong’s VFL side has continued to invite GFL clubs into Simonds Stadium, while also heading to Torquay last week.

“I’ve been trying to do it for the last 3-4 years, but I’ve always had clubs at the last minute pull out or didn’t have the numbers,” Leopold coach Steve Clark said.

“When you’re doing your structures, everyone knows what you’re doing when you are doing it yourself.

“We just wanted to be able to do it against another club.

“We’ve only just started putting them into place, so it’s good to see where you’re at.”

Modewarre coach Josh Finch says the chance to test their systems against a GFL club was an invite the Warriors couldn’t pass up.

“It’s a good opportunity for us,” he said.

“We do all our simulation training post-Christmas to practise your structures and your methods.

“But, obviously, a part of that is you’re training against your own teammates who know where the calls are or at midfield stoppages they know where a certain (ruck) tap’s going.

“So to structure up against someone different – they don’t know where we’re going, we don’t know where they’re going – so it’s an opportunity to practise methods of defence as well.”

Clark believes the chance to have joint sessions has been underutilised

“100 per cent,” he said.

“I’m probably going out the other end now, but if I was starting again it would be something I’d be looking at all the time.
