HE might turn 39 in the opening fortnight of the new GDFL season, and not kicked a ball in anger since 2011, but Geelong great Darren Milburn isn’t easing himself back into the game.

The two-time premiership defender has joined good mate and fellow ex-Cat Peter Riccardi as co-coach of Bannockburn and is keen to have an impact both on and off the field.

“I’ll definitely play. I’m not sure how many games, but we’ll see how the body goes,” Milburn said at Tigers training last night.

“The plan is to play every game, but who knows.

“Obviously I haven’t played for a few years, so we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Having gone straight from 292 matches at Geelong to a coaching role at Adelaide, Milburn hasn’t had a chance to pull on the boots, save for cameo appearances at training.

“I joined in training when I needed to when numbers were low,” he said.

Milburn, who quit the Crows after four seasons in the city of churches, was first approached by Riccardi about having a role at Victoria Park in early November.

“I spoke to him before I came back to Geelong from Adelaide, and seen what he was doing,” he said.

“He said he was keen to get me on board, so it turned out well.

“I told him I wasn’t getting back until the start of December, and then I was travelling overseas for a couple of weeks as well.

“I got in a little bit of training before Christmas and then back on Monday.”

As an All-Australian defender, Milburn will slot perfectly into the Tigers’ backline.

But it’s not just those in the men’s department who will benefit from his experience.

“I guess you can help forwards as well because you’ve played on them as well,” he said.

“Hopefully I can teach the boys some tricks I’ve learnt and some things I’ve picked up as a coach as well.”
