STAR South Barwon midfielder Mitch Herbison is embracing his new role as the Swans start to build what they hope will be another era of success.

Herbison, who played 29 VFL games across three seasons with Geelong, has returned to McDonald Reserve on a full-time basis and taken an assistants role as part of the coaching team headed up by Clinton Wells and James Maas.

“We’ve got a pretty young side now,” Herbison, who won the club best and fairest in 2015 despite playing just 13 games, said.

“We’ve had a lot of the guys from those golden years retire or move on, so that leaves us with a pretty young list.

“Guys like myself, Tom Maas and Reece Woods, are the older guys that need to provide them with a bit of experience.”

The 27-year-old was comfortable to call time on his Geelong experience at the end of last year and enter the next phase of his career.

“I had a fair few conversations with South Barwon and Troy Selwood and Paul Hood down at Geelong,” Herbison said.

“They were really supportive, so they made the decision a lot easier with their support, which is great.

“Working with the young group we have, it’s really enjoyable.

“Everyone’s really enthusiastic and there is a great energy around the place.

“Obviously with Wellsy and Maasy stepping up as coaches this year, it’s really exciting times for the club.”

Since winning their eighth flag in 13 seasons in 2013, South Barwon has missed the finals the last two years.

Last year the Swans won eight games. With a bit of luck it could have been more and had them closer to September action.

“There were probably 4-5 games we lost by two goals or less, so it makes a big difference in the long run,” Herbison said.

“If we can sneak home in a few of those this year, it certainly gives us a good chance to play finals footy.”
