MODEWARRE’s signing of former Melbourne cult figure Austin Wonaeamirri has generated plenty of excitement across the region according to coach Josh Finch.

As K rock revealed on January 31, Wonaeamirri will play up to 10 games with the Warriors in 2016 as it looks to return to finals for the first time since 2012.

“I suppose the first people that have let me know about are my teammates,” Finch said.

“They’re just as excited as I am to have him down.

“Being a builder, I go into hardware stores and get asked questions, “how good’s that having him down?”, and everyone’s feeling the excitement.

“Any ex-AFL player in your competition’s good publicity for the league and, obviously, our club.”

The Warriors open their 2016 campaign with a trip to Anglesea, but Finch says a decision on whether Wonaeamirri first plays against the Roos in Round 1 or Queenscliff in Round 2 is yet to be made.

“We’re just working through that process now,” Finch said.

“We’re about to finalise a few different things.

“He originally said both but we’re mindful of the impact on the body travelling that far.”

“As I said to Aussie, we’re recruiting him because he’ll fit into our club and it’s good publicity for our club and the competition.

“But we want to win games of footy and it’s really important we get the runs on the board early, so we want him down as much as we can early.”
