A DECISION to play with the Western Jets as a 19-year-old has paid dividends for Lachlan Knight, who has taken out the Barry Round Medal as the club’s best and fairest for 2015.

The tall midfielder polled 217 votes to win the award from Mitch Norton (199) with Jackson Volpato, the Jets’ highest votegetter in Sunday night’s Morrish Medal count, finishing third (175).

Knight missed the entire 2014 season after needing a shoulder reconstruction following a pre-season injury – as did Norton.

Ironically, the 186cm Knight missed the Jets last three matches of the season after injuring his shoulder while playing at VFL level for Werribee’s Development League side.

Knight played 14 games this season and was named in the best nine times, averaging just over 20 possessions, and kicked 10 goals. He averaged 5.1 marks and 3.7 tackles a match.

He also made a mid-year appearance for his home-club Yarraville-Seddon and helped it to a win.

Both Knight and Norton were invited back to play with the Jets as 19-year-olds this season and coach Torin Baker was thrilled to see them both get an opportunity to show their talents to AFL recruiters.

“Lachie’s form from the middle of the year until he suffered another injury prior to round 16 was outstanding and he was consistently in the top couple of players for us over that period,” Baker said.

“I think he has enough assets to play AFL. He has an amazing work ethic and I believe that he if he was to get into an AFL system, he would thrive. He is a quality person and I have really enjoyed coaching him for the last 3 years.”

In other awards presented on the night, 2014 Barry Round medalist Brayden Monk was named the Jets’ most courageous for 2015, Volpato claimed the best defensive player, Wilson Berry the Most Consistent, Oscar Junker the best first year player and Liam Carter received the coaches award.

The Jets’ under-15 Player of the Year went to Owen King while Lachlan Fogarty was named winner of their under-16 award.
