Menzel a month away

Updated: June 16, 2015

DANIEL Menzel’s long-awaited return to football is a step closer with the luckless Geelong forward returning to training with main group.

The 23-year-old has battled hamstring issues in his quest to return after a fourth knee reconstruction in 2013.

“It is exciting for Dan,” Cats physio Mark Young told the Cats’ website.

“He’s in full training now, has been for a week, and his hamstring is fully resolved. I guess now we’re just finishing off his ACL rehab.

“We need him to get plenty of football in the next month, and then he’ll come into consideration.”

Menzel last played at any level in May 2013. His most recent AFL game was the 2011 qualifying final against Hawthorn.

Meanwhile, George Horlin-Smith (knee), Dawson Simpson (shoulder) and Billie Smedts (collarbone) are all a chance to play VFL this week.

The Cats are still yet to receive confirmation on the length of time James Kelly (ankle) and Rhys Stanley (foot) will be sidelined after suffering injuries in the win over Port Adelaide.
