ST Albans will expand its junior program to include an under-9s and Junior Girls teams for the first time in 2016.

The two new sides mark continued growth for the Supersaints, who fielded a Youth Girls team for the first time last year.

“(It) was successful in its own right, but needs to grow as well,” junior co-ordinator Jeff Whatnall said.

“We see the importance of having girls footy.

“It is going to be something that the AFL is going to go with, we know it’s going to happen – Geelong, Carlton, Hawthorn – they’re all talking about having a team.”

Whatnall says the under-9s will provide an important transition year for youngsters coming out of Auskick.

“It’s a little bit different to under 10s with the smaller field and the coach walks around out on the field to coach them rather than from the boundary,” he said.

“It’s a great thing that’s been implemented this year.”

St Albans is holding its junior registration day on Sunday February 14 at the netball rooms for both footballers and netballers from 10am-12pm.
