WERRIBEE has again been well represented in the VFL’s Team of the Year with three players chosen in the side announced at the J.J. Liston Trophy vote count.

Defender Jake Wilson was selected at full back while first year recruits Isaac Conway (half-forward) and Matt Hanson (interchange) were also recognised for their consistent debut seasons at Avalon Airport Oval.

The 23-year-old Wilson is likely on the radar of AFL clubs after being invited to attend the AFL state draft combine in October while Conway, a former Brisbane Lions rookie, and Hanson could also attract interest.

Ten of the 15 VFL clubs were represented in the team with Williamstown earning the most selections with seven followed by four from North Ballarat.

Former Werribee midfielder Ben Moloney was one of Collingwood’s two selections while ex-Geelong utility Mitch Brown was rewarded for his strong 2015 form at Sandringham by being named at centre half-forward.

North Ballarat young gun Nick Rippon took out the J.J. Liston Trophy in a thrilling count. Rippon polled 15 votes with four players tied for second on 14 votes.

Werribee’s North Melbourne-listed ruckman Daniel Currie was a surprise overall leader after round 10 on 11 votes, but didn’t poll again for the rest of the season.

While the 201cm Currie only played three matches in the second half of the Tigers’ campaign, he was still the Tigers’ leading vote getter with Conway polling 10 votes.

Prolific AFL-listed ball-winner George Horlin-Smith was Geelong’s leading vote getter with nine.

Veteran Geelong official Vic Fuller was presented with the coveted Alec Gillion Award which recognises an outstanding club volunteer.
