Werribee president John Nicol passed away overnight.

WERRIBEE Football Club is mourning the passing of president John Nicol.

Nicol, who is a life member of the club and took over the presidency in 2006, died overnight after a short illness.

“He was diagnosed with cancer close to a month ago, had two weeks of radiation treatment, but it was probably a lot worse than what we were led to believe,” Tigers’ CEO and close friend Mark Penaluna said.

“It was really a shock to get the news that John has passed away last night.

The 76-year-old was an identity through the Wyndham region.

He served as city engineer, was a winner of the Citizen of the Year award and a member of Rotary.

His contribution to the Tigers started at board level, serving 10 years before becoming president.

“(He) really navigated us through some really troubled times in the early-to-mid 2000s, and was a major, major catalyst and leader as far as turning our financial position around to be what it is now,” Penaluna said.

“As well as overseeing a capital works program that sees our facility as one of the better ones in the competition.

“It’s just a real shame that the proposed redevelopment that we hope to get an answer for in the next couple of months, John won’t be able to see the reward for all the work he put into that.
