McEvoy to again lead Falcons

LUCY McEvoy has set a record that is unlikely to be broken after being appointed as captain of the Geelong Falcons Girls team for a third consecutive season.

McEvoy, 17, who skippered the Falcons to their maiden TAC Cup premiership last year, was returned to the role following a player vote.

The AFL Academy member says it is an honour to be captain again.

“We have quite a few new players, so to already have that influence on them is something I hold really highly,” McEvoy said.

“But also for the girls who have been here for a few years now, I’m glad they’re not sick of me.”

Defender Abbey Chapman will be McEvoy’s deputy, while fellow premiership players Luka Lesosky-Hay, Paige Sheppard, Kaity Haustorfer and Renee Tierney make up the remainder of the leadership group.

McEvoy says she is looking forward to how the Falcons adapt to life without the likes of Nina Morrison, Denby Taylor and Olivia Purcell.

“We had a quite a lot of depth last year, but this year it seems everyone’s really even at training,” she said.

“When we first started back at training, I was like “where’s Liv and Nina?”, but you get used to the girls really quickly.

“They’re really good to get along with.”

The Falcons open their 2019 season against Sandringham at Frankston on March 3.

McEvoy will be right to go despite suffering a bizarre injury to her right elbow in a training accident.

“I elbowed Luka in the teeth, and her teeth pierced the skin and hit a nerve,” she said.

“I can’t feel half my hand, so I’ve had to pad my elbow until the feeling comes back.

“It’s just fine motor movements that are a bit of a struggle.

“If it had of torn the nerve, I would have ended up having surgery.”
