Season done for Falcons

A SEASON that promised so much for the Geelong Falcons has ended with barely a whimper after losing their NAB League Boys Wildcard match-up with the Western Jets at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium.

The fifth-placed Falcons, who sat inside the top three until suffering three consecutive defeats to end the home-and-away season, fell to the 12th-placed Jets by 28 points, 9.6 (60) to 4.8 (32).

“We just didn’t look like it today,” coach Paul Corrigan said. “Right from the start, we were pretty flat.

“To their (Jets) credit, they were pretty good. They came at us again and got a bit of a lead, and we couldn’t peg it back.

“All through the day, we didn’t look like it. We couldn’t get momentum at any stage through the game.

“It’s a bit disappointing to tell you the truth.”

AFL Draft prospects Ted Clohesy and Jhye Clark did all they could to keep the Falcons competitive, as they were held to their lowest score of the season.

“They were outstanding from a leadership point-of-view and could not have given any more,” Corrigan said.

“(Joe) Pike was really good in the ruck, and I thought (Oscar) Murdoch coming back into the side was super down back.

“They’re the real positive stories from what we look at today and what they were able to bring to our side.”

Corrigan said the loss will be a learning experience for the players remaining in the program in 2023.

“I said to our bottom-agers, ‘this is an experience you really learn from. And you’ve got to look at Clarks, Clohesys and (Olivier) Northams of our side this year; that’s going to be you next year, and keep taking that forward for us’.”
